Weekend Natural Dye Workshop
Learn the magic and science of dying with plants.

Learn how to use plants to dye cotton, silk and wool. Over two days, you will learn the process of preparing fibres for natural dying and how to extract colour from plant materials. We will create a rainbow by shifting colours with dips in iron and blending natural dyes to create new colours through immersion techniques. You will leave with a swatch book with shades and recipes to continue your study and experimentation.
What is included:
12 hours of instruction time
Purchased and gathered dyes, mordants and other dye materials
Cotton fabric, silk fabric and wool yarn
Indigo dye bath
Instruction booklet with recipes, space for taking notes and holding samples
What is needed:
Rubber gloves
Apron
Note taking materials
Calculator
Dye materials gathered from home (TBD examples are onion skins and avocado pits)
Clothes you are okay getting dirty, comfortable shoes

Your Instructor
Alissa Kloet is a life-long lover of textiles, pattern and colour. She learned the art of screen-printing and surface design at Sheridan College and upon graduating obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Her textile journey has also included learning from natural dye experts from Toronto, Ontario to Rajasthan.
Alissa has been an instructor in the textile department at NSCAD and now teaches workshops in her home studio.
